Carla Gugino is heading to Washington D.C.
The actress has closed a deal to join USA Network‘s six-hour politics-driven drama series, Political Animals, from executive producers Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Set for a summer launch, Political Animals centers on Elaine Barrish (Sigourney Weaver), a divorced former first lady and current secretary of state, who is struggling to keep her family together while simultaneously dealing with the crises of the State Department. She finds an unlikely ally in a famous D.C. journalist who has spent her career tearing Elaine down.
Gugino will play Susan Berg, a hungry D.C.-based Pulitzer-winning journalist, joining a cast that includes former Lone Star lead James Wolk as Elaine’s son/chief of staff Douglas and Brittany Ishibashi as Douglas’ fiancee.
Berlanti will write and direct the pilot, in addition to executive producing with Mark. Melissa Kellner Berman will co-executive produce.
Animals comes from Berlanti Productions and Laurence Mark Productions in association with Warner Horizon Television.
The CAA-repped Gugino has appeared on FX’s Justified, Showtime’s Californication and toplined TNT telepic Hide. On the big screen, she has starred in Watchmen, New Year’s Eve, Mr. Popper’s Penguins and Sucker Punch.
