Ariocarpus fissuratus

Ariocarpus fissuratus in bloom.
Description:

**PLANT AVAILABLE, BUT PRICED INDIVIDUALLY - TEXT OR CALL (281) 591-8833 FOR DETAILS**

The Ariocarpus fissuratus is indigenous to the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango and Zacatecas. It grows alongside and in close proximity to the Rio Grande river. Additionally, the species is found in the United States in Texas. It occurs from Presidio County, Texas southeast along the Rio Grande and near the lower Pecos River.

The Ariocarpus fissuratus is a master of disguise. They mimic the extremely dry limestone plains, slopes, ridges and low/rocky limestone hills characteristic of the Chihuahuan Desert. The plant's stems are typically flush with the soil's surface, causing a striking resemblance to limestone chips in every way imaginable (shape, color and texture). This provides camouflage so incredible, that it almost seems as if this species has a conscious intelligence! Normally, when someone stumbles across this cactus, it's only found due to their striking pink flowers.

The Ariocarpus fissuratus is a protected species as it is in danger of extinction. Most remaining populations are very small and isolated. Botanists and government agencies believe that the decline in population is a result of plant collectors and illegal collection. Thankfully, the illegal poaching of this species in the wild is declining. Lets hope its not too late.
